In a library, the majority of resources added to the system are normally books. Note the following about this resource type when adding one to the catalogue.

·When cataloguing a book, the system prompts for two types of barcodes like in the image below:

Ensure that in the Barcode box, the accession number is entered. This is normally stuck on to the inside cover of the book and is unique to the library system. No book can have the same barcode/accession number.

In the EAN / ISBN box, ensure that the EAN / ISBN is entered, which is a number that is unique to the publication. This is normally found on the back of a resource and usually begins with 978. Ignore any spaces or hyphens (e.g. 9 781-2345-67896 = 9781234567896)

·If the ISBN does not have a barcode then one can be entered manually or this field can be left empty.

·If the ISBN does not appear on the back cover of the book, look on the back of the title page, or alternatively at the very end of the book or inside the dust jacket.

·If the book is very old, it may only have a 9-digit SBN (Standard Book Number). If this is the case the user needs to add a 0 to the beginning of the number (e.g. 123456789 = 0123456789) to make it an ISBN (International Standard Book Number).

·If an ISBN is entered, the computer will search the CRC Discovery service database for the record which, if found, will close the Resources window and take the user to the resource record card to finish editing the record. If no record is found, the user will go to a blank resource record card to enter the details manually.
